US Green-Card Lottery: A Great Chance

It is a dream of many people around the world to live and work in the United States of America. 55.000 of these dreams may soon come true, thanks to the annual green card lottery. The US government invented this special immigration program in the early 1990’s. It has taken place every year since 1994. Although more and more people participate every year, the chances are still good. Out of twenty applicants, one will actually win a green card, estimates Holger Zimmermann, CEO of “American Dream” Germany’s best known immigration consultancy company. While almost anyone in the world can take part, chances are especially good for people born either in Africa or Europe. Many of these winners are African-born, but now live in other countries like Germany. Israel Osarodion Lawani of Nigeria – now a resident of Nürnberg – is one of them. When “The American Dream” contacted him to tell him that he was among the lucky ones, he could hardly believe it. “This is a ticket to a better future”, he exclaimed, when he heard of the great news. He will soon be able to see his brother again for the first time after they both left Nigeria – in California. Lawani has been especially lucky because his brother will certainly be able to help him in the transition. He is also happy that he can now move to a country where he can use English as a primary language. “It will be much easier for me to find a job in America. It has been hard to get a proper job in Germany without knowing all the details of the German language” he says.

Every green card holder will be able to live and work in the United States for an indefinite time – the card never expires. He or she may also take along the whole family, including all children under the age of 21. However, in order to win the lottery, every applicant must be ready to prove that he has accomplished at least the equivalent of a high school education (for example a German “Realschulabschluss” or any higher degree) or has completed a 2-year- course of qualified training on the job (compared to the German “Ausbildung”).
